Dr. Alyssa Erdmann & Dr. Caitlin Schultz are general dentists who have a passion for treating children. They love getting to know each child and their wonderful, bright personalities, and fun perspectives.
A child’s first visit to the dentist should be enjoyable. The team at Premier Dental want you and your child to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our office. The more you and your child know about what will happen during dental visits, the better you will feel.
At Premier Dental, we treat all ages of children. Children can establish care here with us and continue a life-long relationship with us into adulthood.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends all children should visit the dentist by their first birthday. It is important that your child’s newly-erupted teeth (which emerge between six and 12 months of age) receive proper dental care and benefit from proper oral hygiene habits right from the beginning.
Getting to know your teeth is fun!
Your Child’s First Teeth
Your child’s primary or baby teeth will begin to erupt between the ages of six and 12 months, and continue to appear until about age three. When your infant has finished teething, you can expect a total of 20 primary teeth.
During teething, your son or daughter may experience tender and sore gums. While gum soreness is natural and to be expected while teething, there are a few things you can do to alleviate this discomfort. We recommend you soothe the gums by rubbing a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth across them. You may also choose to make use of a teething ring.
Your child’s primary teeth are shed at various times throughout childhood. The permanent teeth begin erupting at age six, and continue until age 21. Adults have 28 permanent teeth — 32, including wisdom teeth.
Keeping Your Child’s Teeth Healthy
Tooth decay is caused by sugars left in the mouth after eating that turn into an acid, which can break down teeth. Children are at high risk for tooth decay for a simple reason: many children and adolescents do not practice regular, good oral hygiene habits. Proper brushing and flossing routines combined with regular dental visits help keep tooth decay away.
As your little one’s teeth erupt, be sure to examine the new teeth every two weeks, and inspect for lines and discoloration that may be caused by decay. Sugary foods and liquids can attack a new tooth, so make sure that your child brushes after feeding or eating. We recommend brushing at least two times a day for optimal oral hygiene.
Brushing can be fun, and your child should brush as soon as his or her first tooth arrives. When a baby’s tooth erupts, you should brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. For children younger than two, do not use fluoride toothpaste unless advised to do so by Dr. Larson. We suggest reviewing proper tooth brushing and flossing procedures at an early age so your child is used to doing it on their own when they’re old enough. If you notice signs of decay, contact us immediately.
Care at Our Office
Your child should visit our Omaha dental office every six months for regular dental cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year, along with cleanings to keep teeth their strongest.
We may also recommend tooth sealants, as they “seal” the deep grooves in your child's teeth, preventing decay from forming in hard-to-reach areas. Sealants last for several years, but will be monitored at your child’s regular checkups.
When is it time for orthodontics?
By taking your child to a dentist early in life, you can learn about how your child’s individual teeth should be developing, and how to spot warning signs of any possible problems before they develop. Preventing bad habits, like thumb sucking and fingernail biting, can help to prevent orthodontic problems from developing.
Our Omaha dentists have begun orthodontic treatment on children as young as six years old. While this is not often the case, you can rest assured that your child’s smile is in good hands with Dr. Larson. They have completed advanced training in orthodontics, Invisalign®, and the growth and development of children’s smiles.
Should your child develop crooked teeth, an early start on orthodontics can make teeth straightening experience go by faster and with less discomfort. The dentists at Premier Dental will help you decide the most optimum time for braces for your son or daughter.
