Unlike sedation dentistry, sleep dentistry requires the attendance of an anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist is a specialist who deals only with the administration of anesthesia. He or she will administer the needed medication and monitor you during the entire procedure. This ensures your health and safety.

Prior to sleep dentistry, a medical assessment is required to make sure that you can safely use the anesthesia.

Sleep dentistry can make dental care possible for you, even if you have not been able to tolerate dental procedures in the past. Sleep dentistry may be the appropriate solution for you if you:

• Have a strong gag reflex
• Are extremely fearful of dental work
• Have experienced a very traumatic dental experience in the past
• Have TMD/TMJ preventing you from opening your mouth for an extended period of time
• Are very resistant to numbing

Sleep dentistry may be performed in our office or at a surgical center. This depends on the type of procedure.

Minor procedures, such as filings or crowns, can be performed in our office, even when utilizing sleep dentistry. In these cases the anesthesiologist simply comes to us.

More involved procedures, including extensive oral surgery, are performed in a surgical center, and in some rare cases you my need to be observed over night.

Of course, if you choose sleep dentistry you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
